Yogoda Satsanga Palpara Mahavidyalaya, a premier Educational Institution under the auspices of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India and Self-Realization Fellowship is situated in the remote south-west corner from the head quarter of the district Purba Medinipur, West Bengal.
In the history of dissemination of education at Palpara, an illustrious village in Anchal No. 8/2, P.S.- Patashpur, Dist.- Purba Medinipur 40 miles away from S.E. Railway (Contai Road Station), hold a unique place. It was in the year 1950 that Palpara M.E. School was raised to the High School standard and the Palpara High School affiliated to Yogoda Satsanga Society of India afterwards, Yogoda Satsanga Palpara High School was upgraded into a Higher Secondary and multipurpose school (for boys). It is hereworth mentioning that the present college was first housed in the school building in 1964. Under Y.S.S. of India, Sri Janardan Sahu, through whose untiring and selfless efforts this College was established at Palpara, was the heart, pillar and soul of this and he became the first founder-Secretary of the institutions. After independence, the establishment of a college in the far north of Contai Sub Division (Dist. Purba Medinipur) was a crying need. The students had either to go to Medinipur or to Kolkata to pursue their higher studies. More than 80% of the students had to give up their higher education due to excessive cost of living of the urban areas.
To cope up with the difficulties and moreover to guard the unsophisticated moffussil students against the banjicial influence of the metropolis the selfless and noble hearted Yogi Sri Janardan Sahu brought an impassioned appeal for establishing a College to Dayamata
, the president of Y.S.S. and Self-Realization Fellowship, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. and the pious and saintly hearted Dayamata with a princely donation of Rs. 55,000.00 inspired Sri Sahu, then the secretary of the local unit of Yogoda Satsanga Branch Centre at Palpara to set up a College. Thus this Yogoda Satsanga Palpara Mahavidyalaya was founded in 1964 and its affiliation was accorded by the University of Calcutta upto P.U. and B.A. standard for the first time. Sri Sahu, The Principal mover to bring the College into existence, became its founder secretary in the beginning. The College was granted extension of affiliation in History Honours In 1967 and also in Philosophy Honours and Political Science Honours in 1968. The
authorities of University of Calcutta were pleased to grant the extension of affiliation in the B.Ed. Course also in 1968 and 1984 the extension of affiliation was granted by the ‘Calcutta University’ in B.Sc. Course.
Here mention may be made of Late Hemanta Kumar Sahoo (Ex-Secretary), Sri Srihari Sahu (Present Secretary of Y.S.S. Branch Centre, Palpara) Sri Aditya Nath Misra (Ex-Headmaster of Y.S. Palpara Boys’ School), Late Dhirendranath Das, Late Radhanath Das Adhikari (Ex-M.L.A., Patashpur), all enthusiastic educationists of this locality who rendered valuable services for the all-round development of the College.
The College is situated in a picturesque site amidst the congenial atmosphere, away from the din and bustle of the city life. The spacious grassy lawn, the shade-giving trees, the big ponds add to the sublime beauty of the College. Surpassing its infancy, it is striding towards its youthful vivacity and it celebrated the auspicious Silver-Jubilee celebration in 1989. The College (General & B.Ed.) is highly praised by the NAAC and NCTE as the Good College. It is to be mentioned that the College is going to observe the Golden Jubilee celebration in due course with the best wishes of all.
